There has always been a saying that, “what Men can do Women can do it better”. Ms. Latifa Boyelifo Mahama And Ali Awula are two young female carpentry apprentices from Daboya, they are determined to learn carpentry and with a very high ambition, they wish to make it an attractive profession within the district and also want to change the general perception that carpentry is the work of only Men.
All though these young ladies are making all efforts to discourage their fellow ladies from engaging in undesirable activities like head porting which has now become the order of the day within the district. Nevertheless, they are still faced with several challenges hindering their smooth learning of the carpentry work. A few of such challenges are the lack of tools and equipment to carry out most of the carpentry works. In addition, the lack of protective cloths expose them to several occupational hazards. They are appealing to all institutional bodies to support them with equipment, tools and protective cloths so that they will be able to effectively learn all activities involved in woodworks, for it is only through their success they will be able to influence their colleagues young women to the skilled work. The two young girls are currently undergoing carpentry training under their master Mr. Abdul Razak Maham, a client of the North Gonja BAC.
